Mystery Fic #29

---------

NOTES: The pairing in this is more or less canon. Since the story is a bit misleading, I'll give you an extra hint: not only is it a movie, it's a Disney movie. There. Now good luck.

I must admit, I had kind of a soft spot for him.

He was a runt, as ill-suited for war as any of the others, but he tried so hard. I could see the way he kept pushing himself, not wanting to seem weak.

I thought that he might be attracted to me. I felt it, whenever I was in his presence. It was in the way his eyes strayed towards me, then looked guiltily away whenever he saw I noticed. I felt a little sorry for him.

And I must admit that I felt a little twinge of something myself whenever he was close to me, though I brushed it off then as too many days out in the wilderness with only men for companions. Still, he was weak and innocent, and I felt as though I wanted to protect him.

He surprised me the most, coming as far as he did in his training. I never thought he had it in him. And maybe he didn't, physically, but he was clever. And there was more heart in him than I have ever seen in anyone else, man or woman. He just didn't know when to quit.

I didn't expect him to save my life either, and couldn't help feeling afterwards that I had underestimated him. Perhaps this little one wasn't so small and weak as I had believed. But that was before I realized how badly he had injured himself in the process of saving me, saving all of us.

I had come to think of him as mine, almost as a pet, perhaps, as someone who was dependent on me. I thought of him as someone close to be kept under my wing and watched over, raised to be a proper warrior.

Which is why his betrayal came as such a shock.

To know that he had been decieving us all along, well, it hit me like a blow. I felt keenly the loss of my perceived companion, the little one that I would harbor and shelter. This was no ally, no friend, not one that I could trust.

This was not the man I thought I knew.
